PNW Short Track Cup Wrap Up

PNW Short Track Cup Wrap Up

Although we happened to fall on another random heatwave weekend, with a bunch of other events taking place, along with Mother’s Day, we did appreciate having a trial run before going back in late July for the OBRA MTB Champs. Each time we revisit the Washougal MX Park venue we are moving more dirt, building more features, and investing more in the spectator experience.

We did learn alot from the weekend that we will most definitely be implementing moving forward, but please know we are super receptive to any feedback. Comments, questions, and concerns welcomed. Email is info@zone5promotions.com or you can DM on our instagram.

Thank you to all who supported the PNW Short Track Cup by coming out to race.

Thank you to all our sponsors who each invested in big ways.

Stefano and Biciclista was, and has always been, a close partner in Zone 5 Promotions events. From graphic design work, to pounding stakes, to feeding our volunteer crews.

Jason at Sellwood Cycle Repair was our mechanic offering neutral support and we’re so thankful we have someone around who knows how to work on bikes.

Joey at Fox Racing not only donated a bunch of gear but also came out with sample shoes for riders to check out. I’m hoping we can have this on offer again at the OBRA MTB Champs because it was a super cool offering.

Ryan and his son Brendon at Washougal MX Park for jumping in the big equipment and moving dirt around. For throwing a set of bleachers in the shade for us. And for allowing us to come in as guests, repeatedly throughout the year. We don’t take having this venue for granted.

Want to thank our OBRA crew along with our medics. I didn’t hear of any serious injuries. That must mean those not comfortable with the short rock garden utilized my B Line.

As always I want my volunteers to know how greatly appreciated they are. It’s mostly some of the most active participants in OBRA. If they volunteer for our events, you can bet they’re doing the same for other promoters. They are great people who I think just want to see local amateur racing be successful. Again, thank you!

Obviously grateful for the Zone 5 Promotions crew. Stefano, Phillip, Chris, and probably forgotten from this list too many times but does the most besides me, my much better half Nikki Maeda. Thanks for putting up with all my mood swings and keeping me grounded when I have to navigate the not fun parts of bicycle race promotion.

Also don’t want to forget about my photographers who came out. Please use, but please be sure to give credit!

Bertrand Mejia-Morin not only did podium shots, and action shots, but raced both days. MVP by far! You can find his two albums here.

Note from Bertrand: “This folder contains all podium photos and event photos. I kindly request that you ask folks to give me a photo credit (@bertrand.m.m on Instagram or Bertrand Mejia-Morin elsewhere) whenever and wherever these are used. If anyone needs higher resolution images (say they want to print them) I can do this on a case by case basis, the ones above are suitable for web purposes but not much else.”

Denny Burnett was kind of sneaky. I think I saw him with his camera once but we got a bunch of photos. You can find his album here.

Broken and Coastal is always fun to have behind the lens because you know the approach to capture the event will be taken with a bunch of artistic liberty. Love the shots. Love what they convey. You can find his pictures here.

Another big thanks to Mark at Raio Coffee for donating a Ratio 6 coffee maker to raffle off. If you didn’t see on socials, Doug Merritt was the winner! Congrats again Doug! The machine can brew up to 40oz (which is eight 5oz cups). So basically Doug, and 7 of his friends win a fresh cup of coffee at the touch of a button whenever they want. So rad!

Oh, and Lindsay (and her crew and friends for jumping in) at Maple XO for making our BEAUTIFUL podium medallions. Laser etched reclaimed wood from old skateboards. Yeah, we’re into that!

Now the reminders for the Washougal MTB Racing weekend.

The heat wasn’t in our favor, but our crew delivered, and the community showed up. I can comfortably say it was a success! The owner of Washougal really liked what we were able to achieve and he wants to be more involved moving forward. More trails and more dirt moved around with heavy equipment. Stoked!

This event would not have been possible without the help from Ryan Huffman, Stefano Spedini, Tommy Carr, Phillip Trost, Sal Collura, Istvan Takacs, Staci and Blair Bronson, Ben Keaty, Nikki Maeda, Terri Camp, Dave Roth, Chuck Kenlan, and all our volunteers. Thank you so much!

We would also like to thank our huge list of sponsors! Hammer Nutrition, Nossa Familia Coffee, 10 Barrel Brewing Co, Fox Racing, Muc-Off, HiFi Sound Cycling Components, Biciclista, Sellwood Cycle Repair, Victory Lap Dog Runners, and Washougal MX Park. Jake Von Duering from Dialed Cycling Lab made a huge contribution of podium gifts from various companies too.

e8TIMING delivered such a professional timing set-up.

Anahila’s Tamales and Taco Service and C$J BBQ House served up tasty grub.

Nossa Familia Coffee in collaboration with my lil’ buddy Ben Keaty offered free drip and a nice menu of morning drink options.

Dj Karob did a great job playing music and announcing the races and podium winners.

And our photographer James Holk sent over 2,000 photos for anyone to use as they wish. Short Track and Cross Country.

Mateen Richey captured his short track race and I don’t think he even got tired.

Seth Patla also ran a GoPro during his race and you can watch that here.

We would like to congratulate everyone who hit the podium and those who were awarded OBRA Championship jerseys.

We would also like to congratulate our raffle winners! Jason Whittington went home with a HiFi mountain bike wheelset, James Umberhandt went home with an Ingrid G crankset, and James McKinney went home with a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt head unit.

Next year the Washougal Mountain Bike Racing weekend will be brought into the OR XC Series and we’re looking at trying to get a June date. The 2023 event will once again be the OBRA Short Track and Cross Country MTB Championship. The relay race was a hit and that’ll be coming back but we might decide to drop the eMTB race.

Kindly,
Scott Scholz

Washougal Cyclocross Follow Up

WASHOUGAL CX2021.jpg

Washougal Cyclocross has come and gone and for all of you who attended, thank you! And for all those who weren’t able to make it, we hope to see you next year!

The day was beautiful- the weather, the venue, the people…good times. We had a handful of photographers onsite and I’ll be getting photos to all registered racers in the coming days.

For those who like to nerd out as much as I do on individual lap times, I want to express my appreciation to Staci and Blair Bronson at e8Timing for making the trek up to Washougal, WA. They also brought a couple familiar faces in Seth and Maria Patla. A true dream team. Oh, and one of my favorite pups, Ranger!

This race would not have been possible without the backing of our supportive sponsors: BiciclistaTangent Coffee RoastersRatio10 Barrel Brewing CoHiFi Sound Cycling ComponentsWashougal MX Park, and the Dialed Cycling Lab. From bringing us hot coffee, to cold beer, to plenty of podium prizes, you helped take our event to the next level.

I cannot thank Jake von Duering and the Dialed Cycling Lab team enough. They made up almost the entirety of my race day volunteer crew. From 6:30am to 6:30pm I had multiple hands ready to get after it. To have this kind of backing gets me so excited thinking of next year and beyond. Let the collaboration continue!

My OBRA crew was awesome. They made every aspect of playing the role of promoter enjoyable. Thank you to Dave Roth, Terri Camp, Jon Ragsdale, and Will Hahn.

And lastly, to my crew of friends and family: Brian Cimmiyotti, Phillip Trost, Stuart Fisher-Spurlock, Istvan Takacs, Anj Stadnik, Ben Taber, Ryan Huffman, Stefano Spedini, and my much better half Nikki Maeda.

Now I can focus on training and racing the Cyclocross Crusade series!

Kindly,

Scott Scholz
